Common Gate Measurement Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Measurement errors often come from unclear definitions rather than a broken tape or device. A repeatable method makes dimensions understandable to the next person.

Undefined reference points

State exactly where every dimension begins and ends. Between finished faces, structural centres and proposed posts are not interchangeable.

Ignoring levels and slope

Record level changes across and through the opening. A nominal width does not reveal a rising driveway, uneven track path or insufficient lower clearance.

Measuring the opening but not the movement

Sliding gates need run-back; swing gates need arcs; bifold systems need folding zones. Measure the operating envelope and nearby conflicts.

Assuming existing supports are suitable

Dimensions do not confirm structural capacity or foundation condition. Photograph and escalate supports requiring competent assessment.

Treating AR as fabrication evidence

AR-assisted values and previews are useful checks, not a substitute for verified dimensions. Record the approved physical measurement separately.
